The port was originally built to export coal from the mines in the Gwendraeth Valley. It has recently been redeveloped to accommodate a Marina; offering all the required facilities for boating and fishing.
The Burry Port RNLI Lifeboat Station is adjacent to the Marina.
Near to the harbour is the 18 hole Ashburnham Golf Club.
On the A484, five miles west of Llanelli, is Burry Port.
